TITLE: ” Decoding black holes in the era of gravitational-wave astronomy “
SPEAKER: Angela Borchers, Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics(Albert Einstein Institute), Hannover, Germany
ABSTRACT: Gravitational waves provide a unique way of finding black holes in the Universe. Since their first
detection in 2015, gravitational-wave observations have revealed nearly 400 binary black-hole mergers. In this talk,
I will explain how we identify these signals in data from the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA detectors and infer properties
such as the black holes’ masses and spins. I will then discuss how we can make more meaningful measurements
of the source properties and, in turn, use them to infer how these black holes formed.
